WHAT WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE PRESERVATIVES IN LIQUID NUTRITIONALS
Bulgarian legislation is synchronized with European legislation of the production and trade of food additives, as well as of the preservatives, antioxidants and colorants authorized for their use.
There are preservatives and antioxidants that are allowed in the production of liquid (parenteral) dosage forms – for example: sodium sulfite (E 221) and sodium bisulfite (E 222), EDTA (E 385), etc., but they are absolutely prohibited in the production of liquid (drinking) food supplements.
Preservatives and antioxidants that are allowed for use in the production of liquid food additives are: sorbic acid (E 200); potassium sorbate (E202); calcium sorbate (E 203) and others. They are said to be safe, but the opinions of experts in this regard are mixed.
